The Problem

More than a billion individuals – one in seven people on the planet – now lack access to safe drinking water. Worldwide 1 in 5 child deaths – about 1.5 million each year – is due to diarrhoea. It kills more young children than AIDS, malaria and measles combined.

And Indonesia, the fourth most populous country in the world and Southeast Asia’s largest economy is no exception, with 34 Million people out of 255 Million lacking access to safe drinking water.

In Indonesia alone, nearly a quarter of all deaths amongst children under five are caused by diarrhoea disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that nationwide more than 20,000 children in this age group die every year from waterborne diseases like diarrhoea.

The Inspiration

“When the human being is your main point of focus, your main value, you feel alive.”
Jeroen van Overbeek

Back in 2010, I was Vice-President for Europe, Middle-East and Africa for an international corporation. Based in Dublin, I was managing 800 employees spread over 9 countries in charge of a 260 million US $ business, traveling always more. Suddenly, in 2011, I experienced a shift. I realized  that I was helping companies make money, but I was not helping people. I was not aligned with my values anymore. I wanted to give new meaning to my life and focus on humanist values. I realized there was a better way to use my business skills.

So I decided to start my own business, a social enterprise. In 2013, I moved to Asia and I did some thorough research on the pressing issues in the world and how I could help tackle them. I came across the terrifying figures of children deaths caused by drinking unsafe water. So I chose to focus on water and I found an impactful, affordable and eco friendly filtration technology manufactured in Indonesia.

Water is life and I believe that access to clean water is a human right. Because so many people lack access to clean water I created SOCIAL IMPAKT, to distribute safe, affordable, and high impact ceramic water filters to remote villages in Indonesia. Clean water made easily available has a huge impact on local rural communities : you directly improve health and income.

The Solution

The vision of Social ImpaKt is that everyone in Indonesia will have access to safe and affordable drinking water within their homes.

We’re crowdfunding 50,000 Euros on UpEffect to deliver water filters, free of charge to 1550 families and 25 schools in rural east Bali. With such an influx of water filters to rural families and schools, villagers will witness first-hand the economic, environmental, and health benefits these filters provide. With your help, we will be able to make this dream a reality.

Breaking News

As you may already know, Indonesian authorities have raised the alert level for Mount Agung volcano in Bali to its highest degree. The imminent eruption of Mount Agung has displaced about 150 000 people with now more than 400 refugee camps - as of 28 September 2017.

The water filters have never been more important than NOW. We are fundraising for the filters.
We at Social Impakt are already on the ground helping to provide clean drinking water in the camps but we need more funding to keep supplying the growing need of water filters.

See our video on the ground in the evacuation camps :

Rotary Club of Bali Seminyak partnered with Social Impakt, sponsored 21 water filters and helped us install them in the evacuation camps on September 30th, 2017. A great community initiative.

The Product

Simple and appropriate technology

The core product of Nazava is the Tulip water filter. You can use the filter candle for 7000 liters, which translates to 2 years before it needs to be changed. Using this filter, households can filter their own tap, well river or rain water. All products come with an Indonesian user manual with clear and simple pictures, an indicator to replace the water filter and a one year warrantee card.

The Benefits

HEALTH BENEFITS

The filtered water has been tested, it is safe to drink and fulfills the WHO standards.

The Tulip Filter has been successfully used during the cholera outbreaks in Haiti and Zimbabwe and diarrhea outbreaks in East Java, Indonesia. Children are the most vulnerable to waterborne diseases, let's protect them with safe filtered water to drink!

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS

The filter reduces the use of plastic bottles which are littered around in Indonesia, reduces CO2

emissions and deforestation : gas and wood are used to boil water in the villages to make it drinkable.

With our action, we have already saved 9,000 tonnes of Co2 equivalent emissions over the last three and a half years.

ECONOMIC BENEFITS

You save money by using the filter compared to boiling water (5 times cheaper) and to buying branded 19 Liters water gallons (30 times cheaper).

                 0.01 $ per liter                                                  0.06 $ per liter                            0.002 $ per liter

The league of water filter fans is growing....

What our lovely filter users say...

Who is behind it all ?

Jeroen van Overbeek, Founder of Social Impakt

Reward packages

FUNDING BONUS: One Donor to the project, regardless of the amount, will win a visit to the project in Bali, Indonesia for free including airfare and accommodation, if our funding goal of 50 000 Euros is achieved.

Each water filter will come with its replacement candle. Which means that each family and each school will be able to use the water filter for 4 years (2 years with the original filter candle + 2 years with the replacement candle).

What will you receive ?

Financial support without rewards is also possible and equally appreciated.

Impact

The water filters have following positive impacts :

  • SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC : People can save money on gas (5 times cheaper than to boil water) or on water gallons (30 times cheaper). Already provided safe and affordable drinking water to more than 15 000 people in Indonesia through the water filter.

  • ENVIRONMENTAL :
    - Reducing CO2 emissions and deforestation - people do not have to use gas or wood to boil water anymore.
With our action, we have already saved 9,000 tonnes of Co2 equivalent emissions over the last three and a half years.
    -  Reducing the use of plastic bottles, the filter being used as a refill station.

  • HEALTH : reduces waterborne diseases like diarrhea.

  • EMPLOYMENT : Social Impakt built a network of 30 filter resellers in the villages, generating new income for these families.

Schedule

The water filters will be delivered to the villages in November and December 2017.

The village leaders and school leaders together with Social Impakt will organise trainings for the beneficiaries on how to install, use and clean the filter. A monitoring and evaluation of filter use will be carried out by Social Impakt 3 months and 6 months after delivery in the villages and schools.

Risks and Challenges

Of course, risks do arise – we might not reach our funding goal and might not be able to fulfill the orders made by you. Your help in getting the word out and spreading our message will make a huge difference to our campaign. A few clicks by you right now can help achieve our goal.

And there is always the real possibility of things going wrong : production might not be able to follow, spare parts might be out of stock or manufacturing gets delayed for reasons outside of our control. We only work with experienced and accredited suppliers and manufacturers to minimise the risks associated with a project like this.

International shipping : There may be unforeseeable delays in the product reaching you even when our production stays on schedule. This is because different countries have varying customs clearance processes and regulations.

If you have any questions you can always reach out to us:  contact@social-impakt.com

By helping us meet our 50 000 Euros funding goal, you will contribute to the improvement of living conditions in rural Bali on a health, environmental and economical level.

Fund our campaign and help us make this dream come true !

Please also spread the word and share on your social media and with your friends.

2017

1. How long this water filter can last?
The water filter candle lasts up until 7,000 L or approximately 2 years of usage. Dirty water will reduce the lifetime of the filter candle. After each time the filter is cleaned, it will become thinner. The filter comes with a measuring tool to check if the filter has become too thin to use when the diameter is less than 5 cm.

2. What is the filter made of?
The candle is made of ceramic impregnated with silver and activated carbon.

3. What kind of activated carbon is used in the Nazava water filter?
Coconut based activated carbon.

4. What are the functions of the different materials in the filter ?
The Ceramic has small pores not more than 0.4 micron (0.0004 mm) that helps to filter particles such as cysts, parasites, fungi and other microorganism. The silver is impregnated with nano-silver particles that inactivate bacteria and other microorganisms. It is like bacteria killer. Activated carbon reduces level of harmful (organic) chemicals material in the water such as pesticides and chlorine. In this way, it improves the taste of water.

5. What is exactly activated carbon do, scientifically in this filtration system?
Activated carbon only removes some unwanted taste and odor from the water caused by some chemicals that are absorbed by the activated carbon. Activated carbon is suitable to remove organic substances from water including trace elements of pesticides. It also removes chlorine. Activated carbon works that well because the activated particles have a very large surface. One little grain of activated carbon can have a surface of more than 20 soccer fields !

6. What is the material of the plastic buckets?
BPA free plastic. The plastic is made from PP (polypropylene) plastic from 100 % plastic grains made in Indonesia and is food grade.

7. Is the plastic water filter housing safe to use for a long term usage?
According to The Green Guide, a website and magazine devoted to greener living and owned by the National Geographic Society, the safest plastics for repeated use in storing food are made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE, or plastic #2), low-density polyethylene (LDPE, or plastic #4) and polypropylene (PP, or plastic #5). Highly respected brands are using PP plastic like Tupperware and Dopper (a brand of high quality drinking water bottles).

8. How do you maintain your Nazava Water Purifier?
You can maintain your Nazava by cleaning it regularly, around every 3-4 days or when the water flow is insufficient for your daily needs. Clean the candle without soap, you can use a sponge or a brush. When you are cleaning the candle, make sure the nozzle points downwards so the dirty water will not go inside the candle. The candle will get thinner and thinner over time and you can use the measuring tool to measure when to change your candle. For cleaning the buckets, please use a soft sponge so the plastic will not get damaged. It is safe to use mild dish-washing soap to clean the buckets, but you need to rinse it well. After cleaning, dry all of the parts with a clean cloth and you can use your Nazava again.

9. Which minerals can be filtered using Nazava?
The Nazava water filter is designed to filter out dirt, mud and bacteria. The activated carbon filters out (organic) chemicals. Dissolved minerals like Sodium, Potash and Calcium are not filtered. So filtered water still contains minerals, which are good for health.

10. Is Water filtered by Nazava water purifier safe for babies? How do I know that it is safe?
Young babies should drink mother milk. Water filtered by a Nazava purifier is safe to consume by babies or to make milk because it is free of bacteria. If you would give the water to your baby after boiling, it is also safe to give it to your baby after filtering. Filtered water is cleaner than boiled water.

11. Is Nazava certified?
Nazava is a registered trademark. Water from Nazava Water filters has been tested in over 20 labs all over the world with good results.

12. If my water originally has color, can I use Nazava?
If your ground water is yellow(ish) or brown(ish) you can use a Nazava Purifier to make your water clear and safe to drink.

13. How do I clean my filter? How often?
The filter candle needs to be cleaned at least once every two weeks. In order to clean the filter candle use a sponge or fine brush. Do not use detergent, soap, or any other chemicals. Simply scrub the filter with a sponge or brush under running water.

14. What pH does safe drinking water have?
Between pH 6 and 8.
